November 14, 2003 — ReUseit contest results

My entry into the ReUseit contest didn't win. I didn't think that I would, but one can hope. I thought that I would fare better than where I did (middle- to lower-middle of the pack). I don't understand some of the scoring, such as the CSS validation. I assume that higher scores were given to sites with out any warnings. Oh well, it's been a fun experience and an opportunity to push myself. I'll get 'em next time. Besides, it was great to see improvements upon the design of Useit.com.

November 08, 2003 — Music City, Part 1

So, Heather and I have been living in Nashville for a little over four months now. It's been a crazy time.

We had her mom and sister, as well as my dad, come down to help with the move from North Carolina. That was the largest number of people we've had stay with us for more than a few hours. It was nice though. Once you've emptied the rental truck with just two people, help is greatly appreciated.

The right, front tire seperated at some point near the NC/TN border in the Smoky Mountains. "It started out low, then it began to grow." The vibration reached teeth-rattling intensity. Of course we stopped to look at the tires and check any number of levels; oil, transmission, brake fluid, and air pressure. The first two stops yielded no visible oddities. The right, front tire had a higher pressure than the others, but that was it.

The third stop at a rest area revealed the missing rubber. By that point we'd traveled maybe one hundred miles. Luckily we found a tire seller/repairer within two exits of the rest area who sold us a decent used tire to get us to Nashville.

November 07, 2003 — Portfolio freshly polished & exfoliated

As promised the portfolio section has been updated. The latest freshly polished and exfoliated version features images of projects that have been lost in the bits of cyberspace. More projects will be added in the near future. Goodness knows there are enough projects lined up.

November 07, 2003 — Contest Time

Chances are you've stopped by due to my ReUseit contest entry. Thank you for that and let me know what you think.

I'm in the process of updating my portfolio page, as my alma matter and former employer has recently pulled down almost all of my work there as a result of a university-wide website redesign. In the mean time, enjoy looking at someone else's work which I am not intentionally attempting to pass off as my own.

Coming Up: More posts...no, seriously. I'll be talking about moving to Nashville, fun and funny happenings here, and getting situated after another multi-hundred mile move.

March 01, 2003 — …taking the stairs

Life is full of firsts. This year has been full of firsts for me. I've gotten married. I've moved to another state. I was able to spend a holiday with my Aunt, which had never happened before.

This week has included two firsts. Certain Tuesday meetings fall during the lunch hour, so this week the food of choice was Indian, which I've never had before. Curry has been in our cupboard for two or three years now, but eating it within the context of a broader cultural presentation was different and enjoyable. Then again, it was served in styrofoam take-out boxes and cardboard Chinese-food containers, so it also presented a unique insight into the bending of traditional cuisines in meeting the modern American lifestyle.

Thursday's first was, however, less enjoyable. On the way to a Photoshop 7 class on Masks and Channels there was a small power outage; generally not a noteworthy event. I was in an elevator when it happened…and for forty-five minutes thereafter. Lights went out. Berryhill Elevator P-003 did an unnerving shimmy and sink. After calling public safety on the elevator phone, I carried on a conversation with the other unfortunate passenger for the next thirty minutes about web design and Photoshop. She was also going to the class. It took another call to public safety and another ten minutes until we were freed. Needless to say, I'll be talking the stairs for a while.
